Voluntary donations validate willingness to pay before requiring subscription
Insight from Buster Benson
When to use
When launching a new product with uncertain pricing, use voluntary donations or pay-what-you-want to gauge actual willingness to pay before committing to a specific price point or subscription model.
Don't do this
Immediately requiring subscriptions for unproven products - this creates friction that prevents you from learning whether users value the product enough to pay, often killing traction before you can iterate on pricing.
